French authorities have come under fire from free speech activists and the crypto community after arresting Telegram founder Pavel Durov.
India has an estimated 104 million Telegram users, according to World Population Review, and represents the platform’s largest user base globally.
Prosecutors announced that the arrest was part of an investigation into an unnamed individual over cryptology services and complicity with illicit activities.
The Telegram founder was arrested at Le Bourget airport north of Paris on Aug. 24.
Rumble founder and CEO Chris Pavlovski says he “departed from Europe” after French police arrested Telegram’s CEO and the country “threatened” the video-sharing site.
The Telegram team disputes reports that Durov had reason to avoid traveling within Europe.
It remains unclear if Durov has been officially arrested or charged.
Reports are trickling in via social media, but so far, we haven’t seen any official confirmation.
The AMF is giving firms registered under its current DASP rules ample time to transition, too.
